I love Chicago. It’s a great city. But like so many other cities in this country, our educational system is in need of some repair. I recently had the opportunity, working with FollowSpot Media, to attend the New School Expo at Soldier Field where parents from all across the city come with their kids to apply for a better future: Charter Schools.
The good news is that there are 70 new charter schools in Chicago and the system is working — 80% of charter school freshman graduate from high school and 70% go on to college. But the bad news is that there’s not enough room for everyone who wants a spot. The goal of the FollowSpot video was to help raise awareness of how far this effort has come, but also show how far it has yet to go. My goal for the day was to capture some of the faces that will make up our future.

In the sea of humanity that day, these shots jumped out at me either because of the flash of color or the radiance of the smile. I had to shoot fast so there wasn’t a lot of time for technicalities, but with faces like these, who really needs them?
